Shapes are all around us

This is our new theme for the coming week. I didn't think that I would be able to find much for this theme but actually I did. I also made a whole bunch of my own worksheets that I will share below.

Parts of a Fish nomenclature cards

I really enjoyed making these Parts of a Fish nomenclature cards. They took me a while to do but it was definitely worth it because I was so happy with the finished product, so much so that I couldn't wait to do more. I think Little I was a little young to understand all the different parts on the cards but she will definitely enjoy them next year.

Fruit and Vegetable Classified Cards

I made these fruit and vegetable classified cards while I was still teaching. They were always a hit. A few weeks ago when I did a Healthy Eating theme with Little I we kept on referring back to these cards. We used the plastic fruit and vegetables and even some real ones to match to the cards. We also went to the Fruit and Vegetable Shop and used them as a kind of a shopping list. She loved that she got to feel and look at all the food in real life. The shop lady even gave us some fruit to taste.

Here are the links, enjoy!

Rice and Flour

I have been planning small activities for Little I, normally two a day, to add to our daily schedule. I try do at least one sensory activity a week. Little I loved playing with flour in the past but it has alway ended up in tears and a complete mess (because it goes in her eyes and hair, and everywhere else). I had a complete brain wave the other night when I was thinking of activities. I thought to add rice to the flour, just to add another dimension. Little I absolutely loved it. I gave her measuring spoons and a jar and bowl and she poured and spooned until it was all on the grass... and not in her eyes or hair (it was in Little L's hair though, compliments of Little I). I don't know how the rice made such a difference, but it did.

I coloured the rice with food colouring and layered it in this large jar with the flour. Having it ready in the jar was not only a great way to present it to Little I but was also a great way to be super prepared and have it ready when we wanted to use it. (The easiest way to colour rice is to put it in a paper cup, pour a few drops of colouring and stir it as it is drying so that it doesn't stick together, voila!)

Spooning and pouring the flour from the bowl to the jar and back.

Baby Farm Animals

Little I and her cousin Little L absolutely loved these baby animal cards this week. In future I will get pictures of the adult animals for them to match the babies to. Here is the link: Baby Farm Animals

Weather Bingo Cards

As an add on to Little I's Weather classified cards, I made her bingo cards. I am not quite sure what we are going to do with them yet. Here they are: Weather Bingo Cards
Let me know if you think of any great activities.

Weather

I made these classified cards. They are matching weather symbols and real weather picture cards. I am sure Little I is going to love them for her weather theme next week. I hope you enjoy them too. Here is the link:Weather Classified Cards

Some of you may be wondering why I lay out my cards the way I do, this is why. Because Little I is not even two, I only print the cards with the labels attached, so for convenience I put the cards with labels on one page and the cards without labels on another. When she is older I will be able to go back and print the cards without the labels.

Chinese Culture Cards

This year, Candice and I decided to teach our littles about Chinese New Year-since our other sister lives in Taiwan and there were quite a few local celebrations happening. Candice made the girls Chinese Zodiac cards and although they loved the pictures of the animals, they were a bit too abstract for them to understand. I made these cards after our Chinese New Year theme but Little I really enjoyed them. I showed her real chopsticks and how to use them (well atleast I tried), we had Chinese food for dinner, and her Mimi even brought her a real Chinese dress back from Taiwan. I tried to make the abstract concrete.

Here is the link to the cards; Chinese Culture Classified Cards
I hope you like them as much as Little I did.

These would even make a great addition to your continent boxes.

Shape Classified Cards

Little I has always been very good with shapes. I wanted a better way to teach her a bigger variety so I made these for her. I made them yellow because all the shapes in her shape sorter are yellow, and I thought it best to stick to that. Here is the link: Shapes
Enjoy!

Transport Theme Classified Cards

When I started making Montessori Classified Cards for Little I, I wasn't able to find cards exactly how I wanted them, which forced me to start making my own. I have really enjoyed making these. Definitely more to come, so check back.
